Violin Instruction

Through music we can come to a better understanding of ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Through music we can also communicate this understanding.

To all students who participated in the Summer Violin Celebration 2009 on May 31, you did an awesome job!!!

Where and Who

It is wonderful to share music with others by helping them aquire the ability to make music themselves. I offer violin lessons to students from beginning to college levels. Adults are encouraged to take lessons as well. I mainly teach out of my home in Alta Loma. For students in the Claremont area, I teach out of the Claremont Community School of Music.

Performance Opportunities

Sharing music with others is an important part of violin playing. Some of my students play with the Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra and have performed in Little Bridges on the Pomona College campus. They have also taken part in recitals and ensemble performances, and have played in their churches and schools throughout the area.

Recitals for all my students are offered twice a year, one in December and one in June. These are friendly events that are designed to help students learn how to perform and to make performing a positive experience. Family and friends of all ages are welcome to come. These recitals take place in the chapel at the University of La Verne (see picture above).

Sometimes, ensemble classes are offered for my private students in Alta Loma. These classes are held at my house and are for groups of students who want to play together. They serve as preparation for orchestral playing. At the end of the classes, a concert is held for the students and their families.

Teaching Approach

Th students' musical experience to be positive, exciting, and unique to each individual. I emphasize clear, relaxed and strong sound, precise intonation, good posture, healthy playing, and musicality. I also emphasize reading music. For young students, reading is balanced with listening to and playing familiar pieces and with imitating my playing.

For young students, I also encourage parents to be involved in their child's musical training. Parents are always welcomed to observe the lessons. It is great when students share ideas with me and try to incorporate them into the lessons where appropriate.
